![]() At the bottom I'd rate Shadow Sorc simply because they can't gain the full benefit of their unique form of Darkness if they're in melee without messing with their allies' ability to target enemies. Storm Sorcerer is also a viable option since Tempestuous Magic lets you maneuver effectively while in melee, Heart of the Storm incentivises melee range, and Storm's Fury requires a melee attack to activate. Bonus is this will have the least impact on the Sorcerer's spell progression as well, unlike a Paladin multiclass.įor the actual Sorc subclass, I might recommend Divine Soul since the Cleric spell list has a few spells that benefit from melee range, like Spirit Guardians and Inflict Wounds. Medium armor, a shield once they pick up the Warcaster feat, a Cha-based one-handed weapon, and SCAG cantrips let them be downright decent in melee even without Extra Attack. You can have a pretty effective melee combatant using any Sorc subclass and 1 level of Hexblade Warlock, because Hex Warrior is the Cha-based gish's wet dream. If you're going Oath of the Ancients, the 7th level feature is basically too good to pass up. Your chosen oath's 7th level feature may make it very tempting to go 7 levels into instead of 6 in Paladin. This gets you Extra Attack, Aura of Protection and an Oath (Channel Divinity, Oath Spells). You'll still be a relatively high level caster (only 1 level behind when it comes to spellcaster level, and 2 level behind when it comes to Sorcerer spell progression). You don't get Extra Attack with this build, so you're likely going to rely on the SCAG cantrips for damage (Booming Blade works with Twinned Spell and Quickened Spell, while Green-Flame Blade works only with Quickened Spell). This gets you Divine Smite, and a ton of spell slots. There's a ton of ways to build this, here are a couple: Be warned though, those builds tend to start to come online around level 5-8, so they aren't amazing right out of the box. Sorcerer/Paladin both work really well together, so that's probably what your friend is looking for.
